  1. Ephesians 1: 3 - 14
  2. Mark 6.14 - 29

I:       Buried Treasure

I hope you’ll forgive me if on this last Sunday, instead of starting by talking about my feelings on this day or my memories of the past four years, I finish as I’ve tried to carry on, by engaging with the text set for the day.

I do so in the belief that we in the church are like people living on top of buried treasure. If we dig deep enough, we’ll eventually be enriched in ways we could not have predicted, however unpromising the ground may at first appear.

And if ever a passage at first felt unpromising, it was this morning’s. It would have been great to have turned to the gospel set for my last Sunday here and found words of encouragement, hope, reassurance. Instead I found the beheading of John the Baptist.
